With a starring role in a big bouncy musical opposite Broadway darling Kristin Chenoweth, will Promises, Promises’ Tony Goldwyn give up his career as a hot Hollywood director for the stage? Maybe not, but he has been bitten by the Broadway musical bug. “It’s heaven,” Goldwyn told Broadway.com about his all-singing, all-dancing debut while promoting his new movie Conviction. “It’s really whet my appetite. I’d love to do more.”
Goldwyn is starring in his first musical as J.D. Sheldrake, the sexy but married 1960s business man that carries on, Don Draper-style, with women in the office including Fran Kubelik, played by leading lady Chenoweth.
Although the actor says he’s not well-versed enough in musical theater to reveal a list of musical dream roles, Chenoweth seems to be plotting possible future team-ups: “My buddy Kristin is always saying, ‘There are so many parts we should do together!’ We’ll have to call Kristin and see what she has in mind.”
Well known for his acting in movies such as Ghost, The Pelican Brief, Nixon, The Substance of Fire and The Last Samurai, Goldwyn is also a film producer and director (A Walk On the Moon, Someone Like You). His latest, Conviction, which stars Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell, opens in theaters everywhere on Friday, October 15. The film, a pet project for Goldwyn for nine years, tells the true story of Betty Anne Waters, who went to law school to prove the innocence of her imprisoned brother.
Goldwyn can be seen in Promises, Promises, which also stars Sean Hayes, Molly Shannon and Dick Latessa, until it plays its final performance at the Broadway Theatre on January 2, 2011.
“I’ve been working in the theater for my whole career and I’ve never done a musical, so it’s been a total fantasy for me,” he added. “I feel like I’ve been spoiled being a part of this great production with this incredible group of people.”
